Dover is at the heart of white cliffs country, clearly visible from neighboring France only 24 miles across the English Channel. Because of its proximity to the coast French and especially the port of Calais, the modern port of Dover has become a major ferry terminal serves as a gateway to England for maritime passengers.
It is also because the English Channel is at its shortest distance between Calais and Dover that the first attempts to fly a plane were made between the two cities. On July 25, 1909 Louis Blériot became the first person to successfully fly a â € ~ heavier than € ™ aira boats on the Channel.
