Now the House and Senate of the United States are considering legislation to address these security issues and establish higher standards in the industry.
Until this situation is improved, helicopter pilots EMS, police and medical personnel on the ground must take into consideration the condition of those injured to scenes of accidents, the dangerousness of the location and weather conditions and darkness to determine if the accident victims can be taken to hospital by ambulance or whether the risks justify the use of helicopter EMS, As for the safety of victims of injuries and EMS pilots, flight nurses and paramedics.
Veteran EMS pilots say the use of night vision goggles can improve their security. But because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is apparently a shortage of these glasses. Less than one third of the 800 EMS helicopters in the United States have night vision technology. The waiting time for civilian use glasses from the manufacturer America's most important is six to eight months.
