Opened in May 1905, Belmont Park offers American racing thoroughbred horses with one of its most spectacular rooms. With the largest dirt course in racing thoroughbred – a whopping mile and a half main track dirt – Belmont Park, among other things, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Metropolitan Handicap, and especially Belmont Stakes, the final race in America's Triple Crown. Most major racehorses of the twentieth century were involved there, including the Secretariat, whose statue graces the paddock park (and whose 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes in 1973 may well be the greatest feat in the history of horse racing).
Everything starts with the Belmont Stakes. Named most likely to August Belmont, Sr. – himself a prominent man, not only the American representative of the family Rothschild bank famous but also the son-in-law of Commodore Matthew Perry, an official of the Navy, who in 1854 negotiated the opening of Japan to the West – the big issues of race, funded in part by the Belmont, was first published in 1867. In the early years did Belmont Park (which has not built until 1905) but Jerome Park Racetrack in the Bronx, the host of this popular race, the popularity of which helped to ensure the construction of the eponymous room of Long Island, which was the largest of its kind at that time. (Ironically, the Nassau County location puts it Only a few miles from the site dating from 1665 which was the horse race first held in North America.)
The victory in this first Race Park went to Tanya, a filly. Since this year the Park has continued to provide the platform for an improbable, without fanfare or a hard battle after another: Peter Pan in 1907, of never defeated Colin in 1908, Man o 'War in 1920, Citation in 1948. Because of its exceptionally long distance – one during which more than three years have never raced – and its placement as the last leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes greatest triumphs set the scene for some horse racing and losses: consider the victory filly ruffian Pres a 1975 "Battle-of-the-sexes" match race pleasure fool which ended tragically when several bones in the leg of old broken horse (the horse euthanized is now buried in the infield).
Or think of this epic battle between Homestretch Affirmed and Alydar in 1978, which eventually led to the Triple Crown victory Affirmed. This and longest races of the Triple Crown is a surprise, with perhaps a bit more reliability than the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes – Rags to witness the stunning 2007 Riches' victory, the first of a filly in more than a century.
Although often the subject of reconstruction floors during 105 years of its existence, Belmont Park preserves some vestiges of the original (now called Old) Belmont Park. The iron gates that ring Walking horses of the border "are relics Park forum home (they were recovered during demolition), as are the four pillars of stone displayed on Hempstead Turnpike (which date for the opening of the Jockey Club South Carolina in 1792).
The club house of origin and places Turf and Field Club were destroyed during the 1950s, as was the Widener course, seven immediately Furlong diagonal cut through training and main roads that had been introduced during Joseph E. Widener 's long tenure as manager of the track.
In addition to its place in history Race, Belmont Park has its place in American pop culture as well. It is based on his own drink (the Belmont Breeze), has been featured in movies and television ( "The Odd Couple," Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite, "Everybody Loves Raymond") and his own issues first race was televised annually since 1960.
A little known fact of Belmont while disqualified races 1910-12, the park has been the history of aviation where the Wright brothers had chosen as the final place in the tournament Aviation International 1902-10.
