The Mount Kenya Safari Club, with its mixture of romance, history and the landscape has become a Kenyan tradition. Built right at the equator, on a ridge facing Mt Kenya, the site is really wonderful, well worth a visit just for the view alone. The large main building glow white against the green sweep lawns and the environs there are spectacular views of the forest Foothill reaching the peaks of Mount Kenya
The original building was designed as a dream home of Rhoda Prudhomme for her husband. As a rich lady of New York's 50 Rhoda fell in love with the young French aviator who made his big-game hunting on his Safari in Kenya. She gave up all to marry and live with him in Njoro among the Happy Valley set in the 1930s. The land was owned by a Wheelers Ms. who agreed to sell them as "Lovers Only there could he live." The Prudhommes called to the house they built mawingu, Swahili for the clouds masking the slopes of Mount Kenya
The houses with many rooms become an Inn in 1948 when it was purchased by Abraham block. In 1959, William Holden and two friends stayed there for a safari shooting. They fell in love with the place, he bought and transformed into one of the clubs most unusual and exclusive in the world of Mt Kenya Safari Club. Sir Winston Churchill was a founding member along with Lord Louis Mountbatten Robert Ruark President Lyndon Johnson, Conrad Hilton, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby and more over the past 40 years, book club has been signed by many world famous. The Meaning of the story remains strong in the main building and cottages original William Holden. There is a strange mixture of colonial Kenya and the glitz and glamor of Hollywood set. There is a varied selection of things to do here. You can browse the excellent ride horses art galley if forests laze by the pool being massaged by a round of golf, visit the boutiques, books and knickknacks, and stroll in the aviary list goes on and on.
The accommodation at Mt Kenya Safari Club covers a wide range of touring styles and prices. you may experience very different here depending on which room you get. For example you can be social and feel steeped in history if you stay in one of the rooms or suites in the main building. On the other side if you want a more private experience, you can choose one guest rooms luxuriously furnished recently returned to the stream. You can be a rather functional room with small windows or you can relax at the large stone fireplace in a cottage with great views of the mountain. The options are varied and confusing array.
